After nearly two years of renovation work and upgrades, the visitor center at the Wright Brothers Memorial National Park, at Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina, will reopen on Saturday. New interactive and educational exhibits tell the Wrights’ story and provide opportunities for children to develop skills in science and engineering. The center’s most popular feature—a meticulous reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer built by The Wright Experience—remains the centerpiece of the display. Renovation of the 9,900-square-foot building cost about $5.5 million.
The visitor center was built in 1960 and is considered architecturally significant as an example of the Modern style in national parks. The reopening was originally scheduled for mid-September but was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence, which delayed the delivery and installation of new exhibits.
